Facility

The newly constructed Surgical Innovation Training Laboratory (SITL) is a unique 17,000 square feet training and research facility due to its history, location, technology and laboratory features. The new lab is a prolongation and evolution of the previous Surgical Skills Laboratory (SSL) concept but with the newest innovations. The previous SSL was founded in 2008 by Dr. Pier Giulianotti, a pioneer in robotic surgery, and was the first facility worldwide to offer robotic surgery training to residents.

Over the past 13 years, the SSL lab has graduated hundreds of residents and physician surgeons from across the nation and worldwide.

The rich history of the lab is accompanied by its desirable and convenient location in the heart of downtown Chicago.

In addition, the SITL is equipped with the most cutting edge robotic surgery platforms (2 da Vinci Xi and 2 Si systems), the newest instruments (such as the Intuitive SyncoSeal System), advanced surgical simulators from industry leaders Mimic and Intuitive, state of the art AR/VR surgical training and planning systems (Hisense CAS system), as well as imaging and biophysics research laboratories. The SITL will also be used by industry leader, Medtronic, as a national training center for their robotic platform.

With its intentional spatial features, that allow for the multipurposing, multitasking, reconfiguration and adaptation of its spaces, the SITL is a truly unique surgical training and research facility.
