Training

The SITL is an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Accredited Level-1 Comprehensive Institute, as well as an appointed Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) Test Center through the Society of American and Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). The lab facilitates surgical training for University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) medical students and residents from Departments of Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and residents from other affiliated hospitals. The SITL also provides robotic surgical training for attending surgeons across the country in both basic and advanced levels.

SURGICAL RESIDENCY LAPAROSCOPIC TRAINING

This is a proficiency-based training program that spans through PGY-1 and PGY-2. It is specially designed for the residents to acquire basic laparoscopy skills, and make them proficient in the performance of the most commonly practiced laparoscopic procedures in general surgery.
PGY-1 Residents follow the curriculum to adquire the skills necessary for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) manual skills test.

PGY-2 Residents practice in a wet lab minimally invasive procedures that the American Board of Surgery (ABS) included in the list of Individual Operative Performance Assessment.

SURGICAL RESIDENCY ROBOTIC TRAINING

This is a proficiency-based training program that spans through PGY-3 and PGY-4. It is specially designed for General Surgery residents to acquire basic robotic skills and make them proficient in the performance of the most commonly practiced robotic procedures in surgery.

PGY-3 Residents practice tasks using the simulator to master the different capabilities that the robotic platform. PGY-4 Residents training sessions comprise wet robotic labs, following the most frequent robotic procedures.
